Hello all: I was wondering how good the "Email" replys are when posting ads in Classified for tractor parts. I tend to prefer Email rather then play telephone tag with leaving messages. Any comments good or bad?? Thanks... agpilot
Ps: I am talking about the email YTMag service one can get by clicking om the persons name in the AD.

They sold a tractor for me. But it was a give away price. I'm happy.

There have been some instances in the past where the recipient never got the email, but that is probably fixed now. I have replied to several of those ads, and very rarely did I NOT receive a reply.

I suspect some or most of those replies go in the recipients "bulk" or "spam" folder and some people do not check those folders regularly or at all.

They have worked fine for me. Met some really great friends in the process.

I think they are fine ,when I had a reasonable price on the item lot of response and sold it. When I got greedy it was like a ghost town (nothing).

I have run ads on tractors, mowers, steam turbines, a nd a kiln. A couple of people sent email and sounded interested in a couple of items, but they quit responding all of a sudden. I have not been able to sell anything.

L.D.: Hello. I am retired and have been out of agwork (and all other work) for quite a while. I worked in Mt, ND and MN back then. When signing up on this tractor website , I thought using an "Ag" type name would be fitting. Aerial application has changed just as farming methods have so I most likely would be way behind on current info and would sound rusty. Takecare. Keep your wheels outta the fence... ag

Nope, never been up there. Just Texas. I'll be 69 soon and have committed to to my seat again this coming year. Pretty sure this will be the last. You are right about things changing. When I started there were probably more Stearmans than anything else. Heck, maybe more than everything else put together. Now it wouldn't surprise me if there isn't a single Stearman left making back&fourths.

Agpilot: The YT adds have been very unreliable for me, both as a seller and buyer. As a Canadian, I rarly get a reply to an e mail, either buying or selling. Kim checked into this once and discovered she had some spyware designed to shut out Nigerian e mails, however it was also shutting out my server here in Canada. She assured me that has been corrected, however I'm not convinced.

E mail are quite important on cross border inquiries, phoning cross border is quite expensive. It really doesn't matter how detailed and add is someone may always have a question.

I've probably run 2 doz for sale photo adds in the past 3 years, only sold one item and that guy had to phone me as e mails weren't going through.

In the past 3 months I've responded to 8 for sale items on YT photos adds. Only got one responce, and that guy was just thanking me for advising him his tractor was actually 6 years newer than he had it advertised. The others were all inquiries on items I might be interested in.

I've come the the colclusion, YT classifieds are worth exactly what they cost.

Hugh: Thanks to ALL the other posters too.
So I wonder just how risky it would be to just include my Email address right in the AD. I'll soon have my two new computers up and running and I plan on still using one older computer for general internet use. I would use a less valued Email address. So since I would not have much at risk posting my email, why not post my backup email right in the ad? Wondering out loud this early Sunday morning... (the 2 new computers are for business and all other important items and have different email address.) Maybe I'll ask on a computer fixit forum too. ag.

Agpilot: In the early days of YT, e addresses were printed right out in the adds. They worked well for me back then, however folks were complaining about having their e addresses exposed. Kim came up with this new system of the YT transmitted responce. My thoughts are, your not a very successful sales person if your going to try and be selective about who responds to your add. I don't agree with this new policy, in fact I don't even agree that one should be able to take part in discussion and not expose one's e address. My point, if your going to make a statment on a public forum, then you best be prepared to take public heat.

I have close to 30,000 posts on discussion, lifetime. I have exposed my e address in every one of those postings. I do not reveive much spam or junk mail as a result. I quite regularly do business with folks I've met at YT, both buying and selling. As long as they are YT regulars I do extend credit to buyers. I've shipped numerous items to regulars, advising them to pay me upon delivery. I've never been burned. I've also purchased numerous items I know were shipped before the vendor received payment.

I'm not trying to say everyone world wide is honost. I never buy an item sight unseen, that is more valuable than what I can afford to loose. I will not sell an item over $500. sight unseen. To many crackpots out there think one should get a like new tractor for less than $1,000. The way I see it, if one wants to growl about the tractor, he may as well do it in my dooryard, I'll keep the tractor and he keep his money.

Plain and simple, if one is not rich enough to afford some loss, and or not smart enough to sort out the crooks, he best refrain from the business of buying and selling. There is a trade off between how rich and how smart. Rich folks don't have to be exceptionally smart, and by the same sign smart folks don't have to be exceptionally rich.

Hugh: Hello... again. I am just trying to ask enought questions to uncover any major faults with posting my Email address. Faults that would lead to more computer problems only. I was not thinking about male ego or ability to buy or sell or whatever else. I have used two computers, as backup to each other, for almost 15 years to track my investments and I just did not want to start a bad habit of posting my email without first asking others. The best place I like for asking computer questions is at teckguy.org forums. I asked there and so far it looks like using an older backup computer for just Email would be best as well as changing the way I write my Email. Adding a small text message reduces problems from spammers. Example: My address could be written-->
mynickname@(remove this)isp.com The "(remove this)" text eliminates most problems... for a while untill the bad guys change tactics. So it looks like I'll crank up my old computer and delete all personal info and use it just for Email. Let the two newer good computers handle just my business needs.. time to watch more football. agpilot
