The First Anniversary of BeyBase! Q&A Special – Part 1

Today is a special day: it’s the first anniversary of BeyBase!

On this day in 2019, I launched this blog with the publication of my Imperial Dragon review, interview with JoJo [Jp0t], and analysis of WBBA 3on3 Battle Format versus WBO Deck Format.

But before I get into answering some of the questions I received from my newsletter subscribers, I wanted to take some time to reflect on how BeyBase came into being and why I believe it is important:

From Beywiki to BeyBase

For a long time, I was hesitant to take a step into the unknown and start this blog.

Building a space of my own and putting myself out there was a scary prospect, despite my confidence and experience as it relates to competitive Beyblade.

But in retrospect, it seems as if much of what I’ve done in the Beyblade community led me to this point. Over ten years ago, I was writing Beyblade reviews and articles for Beywiki.

Eventually, I transitioned to establishing the WBO Tournament Reports forum on worldbeyblade.org in order to encourage Organizers and players alike to share their experiences at WBO Beyblade tournaments and hopefully inspire others to host their own tournaments.

I wrote dozens of reports over a five year span, as well as three reports detailing my Beyblade adventures in Japan. You can find all of these reports on my WBO profile here.

As time went on however, I realized that if I wanted to take things to the next level and have more control over the visibility, organization, and technical presentation of my work, I would need to create a space that I could call my own.

At the same time, I noticed that while the community of video content creators for Beyblade was quite mature and somewhat saturated, much of the long form writing about Beyblade was confined to forums like worldbeyblade.org and was inevitably buried much more quickly than it would be on a blog due to their constant activity and lack of search engine optimization.

You could find long form writing on other websites not dedicated to Beyblade as well (such as general toy review type blogs), but in all cases such articles were obviously written by people who have no actual experience or insight when it comes to understanding the game or community beyond a superficial surface level.

It will always be a challenge to try and effectively communicate why someone should dig deeper and invest the time to understand something–in this case, Beyblade–on a more technical and competitive level, but with my experience as both a competitor and community builder, I bet myself that I could do better.

Thus, BeyBase was born.

(I also have to mention that WBO Founder Bey Brad’s old Beyblade blog on Tumblr was definitely an inspiration as well!)

The Goal of BeyBase

I’m still just a guy who loves Beyblade and playing in tournaments like many of you reading this, but I sincerely hope that the value and insight afforded to me through my experience with this game over the past near two decades has been–and will continue to be–valuable to all of you moving forward.

The game still has a long way to go in terms of better communicating to a wider audience not only the competitive depth and strategy it contains, but also how wonderful and varied the community itself is.

My goal is to be a small part of the solution to this, both through my writing here on BeyBase and my work as one of the directors of worldbeyblade.org.

Since last December, I’ve been grateful to have received support and positive feedback from so many people in the Beyblade community.

I hope all of you will continue sticking with me here going into 2021!

Also, let me know in the comments below what you’d like to see from BeyBase in 2021. I have a lot of ideas, but would love to hear from all of you.

BeyBase Newsletter Subscriber Exclusive Q&A

I am perhaps most grateful however to the people who have chosen to sign up for the BeyBase newsletter, which helps and motivates me tremendously.

To celebrate this first anniversary, to connect with all of your more, and to thank you for your support, I emailed my subscribers last month to ask if they had any questions I could help answer.

I received a ton of responses and decided to break them down into several different parts based on their subject matter.

This first one focuses on questions relating to Which Beyblades Should You Buy? I also have included a few personal and other questions that didn’t quite fit into the categories that will be covered in future parts.

Read my answers below!

Is Beyblade Actually A Sport?

How Am I Defining What the “Best Beyblades” Are?

Before I get into answering your questions below, you might be wondering: “How are you defining what the “best Beyblades” are?”.

I’m approaching this purely from a competitive perspective, as I want to help everyone–especially those new to the game and feeling overwhelmed by the number of products available in Beyblade Burst–better understand why specifically certain products have been or are currently valuable in the competitive scene.

From an objective perspective however, what generally makes a Beyblade “good” competitively has everything to do with:

Relative Performance

Its performance relative to everything else available in the series it exists within. For example, a Layer A might actually have decent attack power … but if Layer B is even better, that will displace Layer A unless it has some other redeeming quality.

Tournament Format

The tournament format you plan to use it in. Some formats have different ban lists (like the WBO Burst, Burst Limited, and Burst Classic Formats) which affect the competitive viability of many parts.

A good example of this is something like is the Shadow αmaterios Layer, which originally was useless upon release in 2018. However, WBO Burst Limited Format in its current state has made it competitively valuable due to how it performs against the parts permitted in that format.

I made use of it at Toronto’s first Burst Limited Format tournament for this reason.

Inherent Design & Physical Characteristics

The inherent design and physical characteristics of the Beyblade also affect how “good” it can be.

This could be an entire article on its own, but essentially what you want to look at includes:

Does this Beyblade come with a part that is similar to other historically useful parts?

For example, if you are coming from the Metal Fight Beyblade era, you would remember that the Rubber Flat Bottom from Storm Pegasus was powerful. As a result, it could be a fair assumption to conclude that Xtreme’ is likely going to be useful in Beyblade Burst. This won’t always be true, but it is a good baseline with which to initially judge something.

For experienced players, this might be something they can determine intuitively. If you’re new to the game, one good way to learn about what parts were successful in the past is to browse the WBO Public Tournament Data Archive. This archive contains spreadsheets with extensive lists featuring tournament winning combinations over the past 10+ years.

How much does this part weigh?

If you’re able to find the information, knowing how much a part weights is also beneficial to know. Often–but not always–the heaviest parts in any given series are among the most competitive.

The Ideal World: Owning and Testing Every Part Extensively

In an ideal world, a player would own every unique part in existence and test it extensively to have first-hand experience with it. This allows you to:

  1. Make better combo building decisions
  2. Have a better understanding of the potential of an opponent’s Beyblade in a tournament setting.

However, the reality is often that you might not be able to afford to buy every part or might not have time to extensively test everything to the point where you have great confidence that you understand the intricacies of the Beyblade metagame.

In this situation, having a basic understanding of what makes a Beyblade “good” in combination with researching tournament winning combinations others have used, watching videos, reading articles, and generally engaging with the community should put you into a position to be able to define for yourself what the “best Beyblades” are to buy.

But I will offer some of my suggestions below to help you out!

What Beyblades should you buy if you’re coming back to the game after a long hiatus?

What beys should I buy if I just came back to beyblade from the God layer era? – Kai edits

Since you’re coming back from the Beyblade Burst God era, you’re basically starting over again, to be honest! So, if I was to recommend five products to anyone getting started right now, it would be:

1. B-174 Beyblade Limit Break DX Set

The B-174 Beyblade Limit Break DX Set features a plethora of competitive parts, an interesting new stadium, and super powerful launchers. It has everything you need if you’re getting back into the game right now.

To me, this set represents where Takara-Tomy is likely going to be taking the game moving forward with the introduction of the new Dash BeyStadium and “Limit Break” gimmicks.

I may be doing a complete review of this set in the near future, but a few of the stand out pieces to me based on my preliminary testing so far are:

  1. The Burn Ring is top tier for right-spin attack. It has some self-bursting issues, but this might be solved by the new Lucifer 2 Sparking Chip, which has a rubber burst stopper built-in.
  2. Helios Volcano Ou Zone’+Z is top tier for opposite spin stamina matchups out of the box. The Zone’+Z Driver has some crazy life after death.
  3. The Hyperion 2 and Helios 2 Sparking Chips come assembled with Metal Chip Core, which was previously only available through WBBA tournaments, which have been especially rare this year due to the pandemic. This makes heavier Sparking Chips more accessible for most players.
  4. The set comes with brand new left and right Sparking BeyLaunchers with extra long strings. They’re super powerful!

2. B-161 Booster Glide Ragnaruk.Wh.R 1S

The Glide Ring and Ragnaruk Sparking Chip included with B-161 Booster Glide Ragnaruk.Wh.R 1S are not particularly useful, and despite lowered competitive usage over the years, Revolve is still a solid Driver. But it is Wheel and 1S that make this booster worth buying.

Wheel is hands down the best Disk in the game right now, at least for stamina. It’s heavy and most of its weight is focused around the outside to increase stamina. Can’t ask for much else.

Similarly, the 1S Chassis also has much of its weight focused around the outside.

Although there can be a burst risk depending on the other parts used, Wheel and 1S when paired together offer arguably the best same and opposite stamina in the game currently.

To get both of these and Revolve in a single package can’t be beat. I’d highly recommend buying this one.

3. B-168 Rage Longinus Destroy’ 3A

B-168 Rage Longinus Destroy’ 3A might be one of the best stock Beyblades ever released in the Beyblade Burst series thus far.

All of its parts–save for maybe the Longinus Sparking Chip–are top tier for attack types. When combined together in its stock form, this is a combo that cannot be underestimated.

Rage and 3A pair perfectly together, allowing the combo to deliver devastating blows to its opponents.

The Destroy’ Driver offers sufficient movement and greater stamina than traditional rubber-based attack type Drivers. This can be beneficial or detrimental depending on the situation, but nevertheless, as a stock combo I’m not sure it gets much better than this.

But if you want to take things a step further, try out Drivers like Xtreme’ on it, which helped me win a tournament earlier this year!

4. B-171 Superking Triple Booster Set

B-171 Superking Triple Booster Set introduced us to a part which has gone on to dominate the Beyblade Burst metagame immediately upon release: the Tempest Ring.

This part has helped myself and many other top tier Beyblade players from the WBO (example) and WBBA win tournaments around the world.

It is extremely powerful on stamina/defense combinations such as Tempest Diabolos Wheel Xtend+ 1S.

This set also comes with several other rare, new, or competitive parts (Wave, Charge Metal, Hold’, Naked, Goku), making it a solid buy for anyone looking to get back into the game.

5. B-150 Booster Union Achilles.Cn.Xt+ 烈

B-150 Booster Union Achilles.Cn.Xt+ 烈 is the oldest release on my list. It’s here for one reason: the Xtend+ Driver.

Xtend+ is among the best of the best at the top of the all-time best Drivers list for Beyblade Burst. It has top tier life after death, which has become increasingly critical for competitive Beyblade players to consider when building their combinations over the past several years.

If you buy B-171 and B-161 alongside this, you’ll be capable of building Tempest Dragon Wheel Xtend+ 1S, an excellent stamina/defense hybrid combo.

What are the best Takara-Tomy Beyblade products from each season?

What is the most worth buying beyblade product from Takara Tomy in every season up until now? – Genesis Apetrior

Interesting question! I’ve decided to approach this from the point of view that the “most worth buying” products would be those that would have fared the best out of the box in the metagame of each era, or secondarily, contributed the most to allowing you to compete at a high level.

Here are my picks:

Sparking Layer System (Beyblade Burst Sparking):

I’ll have to go with B-168 Rage Longinus Destroy’ 3A for Beyblade Burst Sparking. It’s top tier for attack out of the box.

Check out my reply to Kai edits above for more detail about why this is the best product from Beyblade Burst Sparking so far.

Gatinko Layer System (Beyblade Burst GT): B-149 GT Triple Booster Set

Beyblade Burst GT is the best season of Beyblade Burst so far, in my opinion.

This is led primarily by B-142 Booster Judgement Joker.00T.Tr 斬, and B-144 Booster Zwei Longinus.Dr.Sp’ 滅 due to the way they made attack easy enough to use for most players on a competitive level. You can see this reflected in their inclusion on my list of the Top 5 Best Beyblade Burst Combos from earlier this year.

However, as a single product … I’d have to say the B-149 GT Triple Booster Set was pretty great. It featured several competitive parts and allowed you to build something like Lord Spriggan Blitz Orbit Metal, which was a top tier combo out of the box.

The Lord Layer Base itself was the third most used Layer among tournament winners in 2019 and early 2020 behind only Perfect Phoenix and Judgement. Although Judgement was used more by tournament winners, what the data doesn’t show is the level of usage among players who didn’t make the top three of tournament. That data does not exist, but anecdotally, based on my own experience … it was everywhere.

So, having it in the GT Triple Booster set alongside other top tier parts (like 7, 00, Blitz, Wall, Orbit Metal, and Ωcta) makes this the best Beyblade product to buy from the Beyblade Burst GT series.

Cho-Z Layer System (Beyblade Burst Cho-Z): B-115 Booster Archer Hercules.13.Et

Anyone who played competitively during the Cho-Z era knows that it was dominated by stamina/defense hybrid Layers Hell Salamander and Archer Hercules.

However, Archer Hercules was absolutely the best of the two out of the box, so my pick for Cho-Z will have to go to B-115 Booster Archer Hercules.13.Et.

In fact, this stock combo was so good that WBO member HenryGBradford actually won the majority (if not all?) of his matches at the largest event in WBO history–Beytuber Brawl–with it, earning himself a third place finish!

An honourable mention for me is B-00 Shadow αmaterios 0 Xtreme’. 0 is a top tier disk, and Xtreme’ is a top tier attack Driver which almost single-handedly revived the viability of the type competitively at the time.

God Layer System (Beyblade Burst God): B-98 God Customize Set

The God Layer System has a lot of good choices for out of the box “must buys” like B-79 Starter Drain Fafnir.8.Nt, B-86 Starter Legend Spriggan.7.Mr, or B-97 Starter Nightmare Longinus.Ds.

My pick will have to be the B-98 God Customize Set however given the huge amount of competitive parts included. Some of which–like Bearing and Atomic–have remained competitive in the standard Burst Format to this day.

You can also use it to build a top tier stamina combo at the time like Drain Fafnir 7 Bump Atomic. It was a great value.

Dual Layer System: B-71 Booster Acid Anubis.Y.O

This was a tough one. Looking back at the release list of the Dual Layer System, for a long time there wasn’t really any single release that honestly would have been worth buying on its own. That’s mainly because the Single Layer System continued to dominate the metagame in general for a long time.

B-42 Booster Dark Deathscyther.F.J was definitely worth buying for its Layer and was at one point banned from both WBO and WBBA tournaments, but overall as an out of the box Beyblade it wasn’t great.

I’m going to pick one of the last releases of the Dual Layer System: B-71 Booster Acid Anubis.Y.O. All three parts were excellent for stamina and worked well together out of the box.

Acid Anubis was overlooked slightly given how late into the Dual Layer System it was released, but it did briefly have some impact particularly because of the banning of Deathscyther and Dark Deathscyther. I actually used it (Acid Anubis Spread Revolve) to help myself win BEYBLADE NORTH 2017!

It’s also been nice to see that with the introduction of the WBO’s Burst Classic Format, Acid Anubis has once again become usable in some situations.

Burst System: B-24 Random Booster Vol. 2 Evil-eye Wing Needle

This might be a bit of a cop out, but I’ll say it was B-24 Random Booster Vol. 2 Evil-eye Wing Needle.

Even now–almost five years later–it’s probably the best random booster in the history of Beyblade Burst. Why? Well, it’s because seven of the eight potential pulls were all highly competitive top tier Layers at the time: Deathscyther, Odin, Wyvern, and Valkyrie.

Admittedly, the Disks and Drivers included were nothing to write home about, but given how quickly Single Layer System Layers wear down … players back then were more so looking for fresh copies of those than they were Disks or Drivers.

Not to mention, the colours were great. Love the green/blue Deathscythers, blue/purple Odin’s, and the red Wyvern.

Because of that, it was a great value. I remember buying a ton of these, and actually still have some sealed.

I’m not even sure what a fair price for them would be at this point due to their rarity, but if you can somehow find them, you should pick them up.

What is the best store to buy Beyblades from?

Also, where is the best place to get beys from? – Alex

That depends on what kind of Beyblades you are looking for. I can give a few recommendations for where to buy Beyblades online:

eBay

You can find pretty much anything on here, but you’ll have to keep a look out for fakes and long shipping times.

Zenmarket

This is a middleman service that gives you access to Japanese stores and sites like Yahoo! Japan Auctions. You can order items from multiple auctions or stores, have them shipped to Zenmarket, and then have them send one large package to you.

MallOfToys

This is the sponsor of BeyBase, but I’m not recommending them just because of that! They’re located in the US and stock all of the new Takara-Tomy releases at good prices.

So tell us that who is your favorite Beyblade burst character as well as your favorite Beyblade (from any season) 👍

Also tell us your most memorable experience during your beyblade career 🙃 – Piya and Prakhar

Favourite Beyblade Character

I actually haven’t watched much of the Beyblade Burst anime or read much of the manga, sorry! I’ve very much become almost exclusively a player.

That being said, I do have a favourite Beyblade character … Kai!

Fun Fact: My blader name “Kei” is dervied from “Kai”. Many years ago when I was joining Off the Chain–a Beyblade website that can be considered the predecessor to the World Beyblade Organization–I wanted to use “Kai” as my username (very original, I know), but it was taken. So, I switched the “a” to an “e” and the rest is history!

Favourite Beyblades

I’ll give you my favourites from each generation, purely from an aesthetic perspective:

Plastics: Dragoon GT

I am a huge fan of Kai, but … there’s always been something about Dragoon GT that I’ve loved. The Attack Ring is just so great aesthetically. And it even has use competitively for smash attack combinations too. It helped me to win a tournament in the past, so I’m fond of it for that reason as well.

If I ever get more deep into collecting Beyblades, one thing I’d really love to get is the black version and the set of black launcher grip accessories that it comes with … if anyone has one for a decent price or wants to trade, let me know!

Quetzalcoatl 90WF is also another favourite of mine. In general, I’d say I probably prefer the Metal System at the beginning of the series to anything that came after it.

Most Memorable Beyblade Experience

There’s too many to name here! I’d highly recommend checking out the The History of the WBO: 10th Anniversary Interview Series that I did a few years ago. I interviewed many key figures from the history of the WBO, but also answered the same questions myself. In them, I detail a lot of my most memorable experiences.

That only covers up to 2018, so for 2019 I’d have to say that traveling to California for Beyblade West was extremely memorable! And in 2020, I was fortunate enough to have traveled to Japan right at the start of the year before COVID-19 hit and finally attended my first ever WBBA G3 and G1 events. Attending those was a dream come true.

Why don’t I chat much on the WBO Discord?

Hello Kei,
I was wondering why don’t we see you chatting in the WBO Discord?
Cheers! – Mikuri

I chat on the WBO Discord every so often! And a lot of the time I’m lurking but might not have time to chat. But the truth is that most of my activity in the community online lately is behind-the-scenes.

Despite my love for Beyblade, it ultimately remains a hobby. So, I’ve chosen to dedicate the time I do have to spend on Beyblade in a few areas:

  1. Playing in and hosting tournaments in real life
  2. Managing and continuing to improve the WBO with our staff team behind-the-scenes
  3. Building this blog, BeyBase
  4. Testing Beyblades

All four of these things often take up the entirety of the amount of time I have available to spend on Beyblade (while balancing other non-Beyblade responsibilities).

I’d love to have more time to chat on the WBO Discord (and am so happy to see so many people are enjoying it!), but the four things above for me personally are either what matters the most to me personally or where I feel I can have the most positive impact on the community at large right now and looking forward to the future.

My hope is that through these things, I can create or facilitate meaningful connections online, offer deeper insight and guidance to those that seek it, build a more valuable community environment for as many people as possible all at once, and enjoy actually playing Beyblade and connecting with others in real life.

In fact, that the WBO Discord now exists is partially a result of my focus on the second item above as a part of the WBO’s Project AIDA.

How have I been able to play Beyblade for such a long time?

Any tips on how you play Beyblade for so long. – RED NINJA 0829

Not sure if this is a reference to the fact that my status on Discord is always “Playing Beyblade” or if it’s a more serious question … I’ll assume the latter because the answer will be more useful:

I’ve been able to play Beyblade for such a long time by understanding what part of Beyblade is meaningful to me.

To me, playing competitively and winning tournaments is what motivates me to play and to improve my skill and knowledge.

As a result, most of my efforts when it comes to actually playing Beyblade are laser-focused on what steps I need to take in order to win whatever tournament I plan to play in next.

I don’t play casually that much and don’t worry that much about constantly playing in reality unless we are talking about a contained period leading up to an event.

As such, even though I’ve been playing the game for nearly two decades now, I don’t feel burned out because I know when to play and how to play in a manner which is meaningful to me.

Limit Break System vs. Normal Sparking System

Do you prefer the Limit break system or the normal sparking system? Why? – Everblaze

It’s too early for me to make a final determination, but right now I would lean towards the normal Sparking system.

The Single and Double Chassis concept is strong because it allows for both creative Double Chassis like 2D and Single Chassis like 1S which give access to all existing Disks. It’s the best of both worlds.

The Limit Break system is quite fun with the gimmicks it permits on the Layers, but it remains to be seen if Takara-Tomy will be able to produce a gimmick that helps a Layer in any noticeable way. The existing gimmicks on Volcano and Burn are not particularly helpful, and in the case of Burn, are detrimental to its performance.

Although, considering when the limit break will activate based on the Disk you choose to use is an interesting competitive consideration built into the design of the system.

Will Hyperion Burn and Helios Volcano be released in a Random Booster?

Hi, will the new hyperion and helios come in a random booster? – Dwayne

I’m not sure! What I am sure of though is that almost everything is eventually re-released somewhere else by Takara-Tomy.

For now, they’re only available in the B-174 Beyblade Limit Break DX Set.
