F-Zero 99 is the first new game in the series since F-Zero Climax nearly 20 years earlier. As the name may suggest, it's a Battle Royale game much like Tetris 99, Super Mario Bros. 35, and Pac-Man 99 (albeit without Arika's involvement this time), being based on the first game with some new elements added.

As you may have guessed, reactions are mixed. Some are happy to have a new F-Zero game, while others feel a bit insulted that the series' return is essentially a retread rather than a proper new game.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Leftovers

The game internally was partially based off NST's work for the previous game, as a small amount of its content is present.

Font References

Present in the executable, there are strings for its fonts. MarioFont128Solid does not have RedCarpetS_ in the name.

NetworkPlayer Model

The NetworkPlayer archive contains the model and data for a Goomba, similar to the Kuribo archive.

Unused Graphics

Unused Tracks

There are unused graphics for entirely original tracks that have not appeared in any prior F-Zero game. None of these tracks have stage data pointing to them, and all use placeholder layouts that are identical to Mute City I with different palettes and off-road textures.

Forest

\ObjectData\ForestLandscape.szs

\ObjectData\ForestTrack.szs

Graphics for a track named Forest, which shares its name with a set of tracks from the SoundLink version of BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2, albeit with different graphics. The internal texture name of the landscape graphics is Forest_alb, which appear to resemble leaves (although the image uses a blue palette), and the internal texture name of the track is Volcania_Track. It was removed from the game's data in version 1.1.0.

Sulfur Swamp

\ObjectData\SulfurSwampTrack.szs

Graphics for a new track named Sulfur Swamp. The internal landscape texture name is also Forest_alb, and the internal track texture's name is also Volcania_Track. It was removed in version 1.2.0.

Volcania

\ObjectData\VolcaniaClouds.szs

\ObjectData\VolcaniaLandscape.szs

\ObjectData\VolcaniaTrack.szs

A placeholder for a new track named Volcania. It was removed in version 1.2.0.

Remix Course

A course that was added (v1.1.0) and removed (v1.1.5) without being used. It is likely an early version of Mystery Course #3, featuring elements of Death Wind and White Land. It contains several differences from the course used in the final game:

  • There is no boost arrow before the starting line. The final track has one in the same location as Death Wind I and II.
  • There is only one jump section after the second Slip Zone, featuring six Jump Plates over rough and four pull-down magnet panels. The final track has two jump sections, with the first being three jumps over rough and the second being four jumps over rough and two pull-down magnet panels.
  • The hairpin turn goes the opposite way, requiring you to turn left, then turn 180 degrees to the right, then turn left into the pit. In the final track, the turn points toward the other side of the track, so you turn right, then 180 to the left, then right into the pit.

Unused Model

A full 3D model of Mute City I, suggesting that at some point in development the game would have used 3D tracks. The final game uses 2D tracks on a flat plane, emulating the Mode 7 effects used in the original F-Zero, with the only 3D elements being Jump Plates.

Replaced Images

Due to the live-service nature of this game, several pictures in Mr. Zero's tips were changed when later updates made them outdated.

  • "Check out the leaderboard to see this week's top pilots!" had the league tabs at the top changed to read "Leagues" in the plural, due to the addition of the Mirror Leagues.
  • "Use the Workshop to customize your machines and Pilot Cards." had the Spin tab added to the customization menu, as the 1.3.0 update separated Boost and Spin into two separate categories.
  • "You can review your career stats by visiting Records in the Workshop." had the "Most Matches - Lucky Rank" stat added to it, as the 1.1.0 update added the Lucky Rank mechanic.
